Overview
Melanotan 2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-MSH that activates multiple melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). Originally developed for tanning research, MT-2's effects on MC4R led to the development of PT-141 (Bremelanotide) for sexual dysfunction research.
Mechanism of Action
MT-2 produces multiple effects through MCR activation:
- MC1R: Melanogenesis (tanning)
- MC3R: Energy homeostasis
- MC4R: Sexual function, appetite
- MC5R: Exocrine gland function
